Small, inconspicuous, crucial: the CE mark
A compressor runs, compressed air flows—yet in day-to-day operations, hardly anyone gives a second thought to the letters, just a few millimeters high, on the nameplate. Yet the CE mark is precisely what determines whether a compressed air system may be legally operated at all. It is time to take a closer look.
Not a seal of quality, but a passport for the Single Market
The CE mark (*Conformité Européenne*) is not a quality seal from an independent testing body, but a self-declaration by the manufacturer. By affixing it, the manufacturer confirms in writing—via the EU Declaration of Conformity—that the product meets all relevant EU health and safety requirements. It is comparable to a passport: it opens the door to the entire European Economic Area without requiring each individual country to conduct its own inspection.
For compressors, compressor units, and complete compressed air stations, this means in concrete terms: without the CE mark, there can be no legal sale or commissioning—whether for commercial or private use.
The special case: the piston compressor unit
This is where things get particularly interesting for the compressed air industry. The Machinery Directive makes a strict distinction between:
- Complete machinery – which receives the CE mark and a Declaration of Conformity.
- Partly completed machinery – a piston compressor unit intended for installation into a larger system is explicitly cited as an example here.
Consequently, a compressor unit supplied in isolation does not receive a CE mark under the Machinery Directive; instead, it comes with a Declaration of Incorporation and installation instructions. The actual CE mark is applied only by the party that assembles the unit into a complete system. This integrator is then responsible for carrying out the entire conformity assessment procedure—including the risk assessment.
Practical note: Since these units are often subject to other regulations (such as the EMC Directive), a CE mark frequently appears on the nameplate anyway. However, this mark relates exclusively to those other regulations—not to the Machinery Directive. Consulting the accompanying documentation clarifies the situation.
Why this goes beyond safety: Motors, fans, and efficiency
CE conformity implies far more than just the absence of unprotected moving parts. Compressed air systems, with their drive motors and cooling fans, also fall under Ecodesign directives. These mandate minimum efficiency levels—such as IE3 or IE4 efficiency classes for drive motors.
Of particular relevance to fans and ventilation components in compressed air systems is the fact that, as of July 24, 2026, the previous Regulation (EU) No. 327/2011 has been superseded by the new Regulation (EU) 2024/1834. Assessment now focuses not merely on the motor in isolation, but on the entire system—comprising the motor, control system, aerodynamics, and attached components—subject to stricter limits on CO₂ emissions. What happens without valid conformity?
Operating a compressed air system that does not comply with CE standards is no trivial matter; it poses a serious risk on several levels:
- Safety: Missing protective guards or defective equipment significantly increase the risk of accidents.
- Legal: The Industrial Safety and Health Ordinance obliges employers to provide only safe work equipment. Violations can lead to immediate bans on use, fines, and—in the event of an accident—criminal proceedings.
- Insurance: Property and liability insurers often refuse to settle claims if compliance is lacking. Employers' liability insurance associations may reclaim benefits already paid out in cases of gross negligence.
- Financial: Retrofitting, retrospective certifications, and production downtime caused by official shutdowns can quickly add up to substantial costs.
A practical example: If a new system contains a fan that fails to meet the efficiency criteria of the Ecodesign Directive, the system risks being shut down by authorities until the manufacturer retrofits it. The financial loss can be significant.
Watch out for this pitfall: unauthorized modifications
One point that many operators of compressed air systems are unaware of is that CE conformity lapses as soon as unauthorized modifications are made to a CE-compliant machine. For instance, anyone who removes a protective cover from a compressor or replaces components may be held personally liable in the event of damage—despite the machine originally bearing a valid CE mark.
Looking ahead: the new Machinery Regulation
The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is currently still in force—but only until January 19, 2027. From January 20, 2027, the new EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 will become binding. While the fundamental principle of the CE mark remains, the rules are becoming stricter—particularly regarding machines with AI components, cybersecurity risks, and "substantial modifications" to used machinery. Here, too, the rule applies: anyone operating or modernizing compressed air systems should keep this transition on their radar early on.

The CE mark on a compressor, compressor unit, or compressed air station is more than just a formality. It serves as visible confirmation that safety, health, and—increasingly—efficiency requirements are being met, covering everything from the drive motor to the cooling fan. Operators who understand what matters—especially regarding "partly completed machinery" such as piston compressor units—not only avoid legal and financial risks but, above all, protect the people who work with the system every day.
