Storz couplings and accessories
Storz couplings - The reliable connection for demanding applications
Storz couplings are symmetrical, non-locking couplings that are equipped with a practical bayonet lock. This design enables a simple connection without screw connections. Storz couplings are highly resistant to water, acids and corrosion and are used in various areas, including the fire department, fire protection, agriculture, industry (such as the food and chemical industries) and construction. Thanks to their different designs and sizes, they offer the right solution for every individual requirement.
Design and shape of the Storz couplings
Storz couplings are made from durable materials, usually aluminum and aluminum alloys. Their symmetrical arrangement means that both locking heads are identical and the connection can only be made in one direction. The bayonet lock is secured by a protective collar. The outer shape of the coupling is round, which offers the further advantage that it is easy and comfortable to handle.
How the Storz coupling works
The main function of Storz couplings is to securely connect fixed connections or hoses. The mechanism is very simple: the connection is closed or released by inserting the coupling elements into each other and then turning them. This design enables uncomplicated handling, whereby the seals are not twisted against each other, which protects their service life. Storz couplings are also insensitive to dirt and protected against abrasion, which further increases their robustness.
Employment in the fire service
A key area of application for Storz couplings is the fire department, which is why they are known as fire department couplings. They are ideal for transporting water and are equipped with an NBR seal (nitrile butadiene rubber), which is suitable for both aqueous and oily liquids.
Applications in the commercial sector
These couplings are widely used in areas where flat or dimensionally stable hoses are used that are considerably larger than standard garden hoses with a nominal diameter of 1 inch. Typical industries include construction, agriculture, shipping, supply and disposal and fish farming.
Seven standardized sizes in Germany
Seven standardized sizes of Storz couplings are defined in Germany: A, B, C52, C42, S32, S28 and D. These sizes vary in the distance between the cleats and the hose diameter, with a downward trend. In sizes A and B in particular, the connection can often be made without tools when depressurized. In size D, couplings can be decoupled under pressure by bending the hose twice, which makes it possible to extend or remove lines during use, even if there is pressure in the system. Size D can also be used as a suction coupling. All regular sizes are used in the fire department, while special sizes are used in other areas, such as when filling water tanks in trains. Comparable couplings are used in Switzerland, but they are standardized by inner diameter.
